Sutures no fix for bleeding problem
Question: I recently had several bad upper teeth removed in preparation for implants four months from now. That same night I had a lot of bleeding and called the doctor, who told me he could not suture the wounds closed. Is this OK? - M.S., Palm Beach
Answer: A cardinal oral surgery rule drilled into us in dental school was: Sutures are not for stopping bleeding.Hemostasis must be achieved before suturing. Very often upper extraction sites cannot be sutured because of the tenacious nature of the tissue in that area. The use of the product Ora Plug, resorbable bovine collagen, is an excellent socket wound dressing for controlling bleeding and stabilizing blood clots.
